16.11.2005, Australian Footballs Greatest Night. 1000 emotions all rolled in one. It had been 32 Years since the @socceroos had achieved World Cup qualification. The perception of the sport was still one of being the ugly step cousin of the footy codes due poor governance, clubs that contrast what the media perceive’s as “Australian”. Our luck in past campaigns didn’t help any favours to get any coverage, but 2 years prior to the John Aloisi Penalty kick a change was the horizon with Frank Lowy making drastic changes with the formation of the @aleague and moving to the Asian Football Confederation, us football supporters knew that World Cup qualification was the cherry on top to give footballs new face a jump start with the coverage World Cup Qualification guaranteed to inspire a future generation of football supporters. I’m going to make it blunt, Aloisi’s penalty saved Australian Football. We like to see ourselves as a sporting nation but are we truly one if we we’re going isolate the nation from the biggest sport of them all.
