How many bees do you see in urban environments? Urban spaces play an incredibly important role in providing habitat for pollinators. We had to share this great message from victorygardeni, one of our grantee programs that’s preserving the “wild” in the city.

It's #FarmFactsFriday and today we're talking about #pollinators! This year we are making a special effort to make our 1.5 acre farm more welcoming to bees and butterflies. We even wrote and received two grants to install pollinator gardens and pollinator friendly infrastructure, one from the #FeedABee program and one from kidsgardening! Our farm is looking mighty bee-utiful this summer!

But why focus on pollinators when our little farm is located in an urban environment? Many people believe that conservation work is a task that takes place out in the "wild." That the only way to save the natural beauty of the world is to preserve wild spaces. This is certainly an incredibly important goal. But so much can be done to help preserve the "wild" right here in the city. Studies are showing that urban greenspaces are a haven for many of our native pollinator species. In some cases, more native species of bees have been observed in well managed urban plots than in nearby rural areas! (https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/cobi.12840)

Beyond that, providing these spaces for pollinators also serves as a powerful educational and awareness tool for city-dwellers. Being able to get up close and personal to one of our beehives or to have a Monarch land on your shoulder can be an impactful moment, especially for our youth!
Take a look at some of our favorite pollinator photos from the farm this year and then go check out this article on how you can encourage pollinators in your own space!
