I could not have chosen a better business community than Philadelphia 🔔

Lately, about half of my week is spent at networking events throughout the city.

Which is something that would terrify my 22-year-old self if she knew that would be her job.

But the 28-year-old version of me absolutely loves it.

Once I stopped seeing networking as a sales tool, everything changed.

No one wants to be sold to – especially when you're standing in front of them talking about themselves when all they can think about is how they're going to eat the snacks they just grabbed while holding a glass of wine in their hands and planning what to say about themselves the second you stop talking.

So, I stopped.

I just started connecting with people.

At these events, I don't care if I talk about my business once or a thousand times.

It doesn't matter. That's not what I'm here for.

These have become an opportunity for me to meet other professionals in the city.

Some have become clients – it's not uncommon for me to walk out of an event with $10k+ in writing contracts without them ever looking at a word I've written.

Some have become friends – my happy hour network has expanded exponentially. (As has my gossip circle)

Some have become sources of advice... or an open ear for a frustrated business rant.

And almost all of them have become familiar faces around the city that I can smile at and say hi to if I ever catch them in the wild.

Networking doesn't have to be intimidating.

You're just meeting new people, and you've been doing that since kindergarten.

The goal isn't to sell yourself or impress anyone.

The goal is just to have a new face to say good morning when you see them out and about.

Carve out your space in the community, and you'll be surprised by how much easier it gets every single time.

You'll be extra surprised when they actually WANT to work with you because they really want to, not because you cornered them by the "light bites provided."
