What could be one of the world's biggest IT blackouts in history happened on Friday, after a faulty tech update froze internet functions on computers running on Microsoft Windows.

The problem wasn't hacking or a cyberattack—rather, a seemingly simple cybersecurity update from the firm CrowdStrike brought airlines, hospitals, small businesses, government offices, and other customers to a standstill early Friday morning.

Long lines formed at airports as airlines like Delta and American Airlines lost access to check-in and booking services, grounding thousands of flights. A few larger hospital systems in the US had to cancel some appointments, including for critical care, while some state officials warned of issues related to people being able reach 911 in their areas.

CrowdStrike apologized and said a fix was on the way.

Transportation systems should largely return to normal operations by Saturday, according to Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, but issues persist.

“We have such tightly wound and interdependent systems that these ripple effects can carry on, but it does seem, as of now, hour by hour, the issues are being addressed, resolved and smoothed out,” Buttigieg told CNBC on Friday.
