"Peace be with you!"

In today's Gospel we see St. Thomas the Apostle 👏 ask 👏 for 👏 the 👏 receipts. He knows what happened. He knew what Jesus said. And he heard from the other apostles that Jesus had returned and had been with them. But still, he doubts. He claps back.

I recently caught up with a photog friend who I was supposed to see this weekend (obvs before the pandemic punched the world’s plans in the face). We shared some deep doubts we had about the future, a number heightened by the pandemic and our circumstances. After a possible C19 infection forced them to isolate, like many others, they took stock of their situation and their future. But after a negative test result, life trudged on, at least as much as it can right now, social distancing and all. They eagerly moved into a new home, one with a big yard for the dog (and them), birds in the trees and a classic wood floor. And room to breathe.

Hearing of the heaviness of how my friend struggled to breathe during their health scare was terrifying. As they settled, my friend set up some of their plants in the sunlight. A warm, peaceful scene. We see how God provides in our needs, exchanging our panic for peace. It’s often not clear, we ask for the receipts, but later, or sometimes sooner, things make sense. Maybe you've had time to think about things, but maybe you haven't. Right now, time seems to accelerate and slowdown in the same breath. But that's OK. Mercy doesn't mind waiting.

"What will the years ahead bring us? What will man's future on earth be like? We are not given to know. However, it is certain that in addition to new progress there will unfortunately be no lack of painful experiences. But the light of divine mercy, which the Lord in a way wished to return to the world through Sr Faustina's charism, will illumine the way for the men and women of the third millennium. However, as the Apostles once did, today too humanity must welcome into the upper room of history the risen Christ, who shows the wounds of his Crucifixion and repeats: Peace be with you!"
- St. John Paul II, on the occasion of St. Faustina's canonization on #DivineMercySunday, April 30, 2000
