She’s a single mom throwing her little girl’s toys away. 
She took off her gloves to wring out her sweat-soaked bandana after walking to the growing pile outside her apartment home. Then another. And another. 
Even with volunteers, three helping to save what was left, it’s endless. Clothes, pots and pans, stacks of family tapes and photos, a basket of dolls, kids books and trinkets, all still damp from floodwater that rushed in from Braes Bayou. A family’s life story now baked in the August sun. 
Her vanity mirror, its frame warped from the moisture, became a sun oven, reflecting solar rays that made the nearby air temperature soar to stifling degrees. It felt like a sauna.
Again inside her home, she stopped and sighed, steadying herself on her kitchen’s slippery-with-mud floors. Her last delivery? Her daughter’s mud-caked prayer cards: “Jesus loves you, this you know. You love Jesus, tell Him so!” •
Feb. 25 marked six months since Hurricane #Harvey barreled through #Texas. #BecauseOfHarvey is a look back to the people I met and the places and things I saw. *Not her real name. She bravely shared her story, but wanted privacy. Pray for her family, and contribute to continued disaster relief.
