“You’re in my bathroom,” she told me. I stepped through (!) a wall, and into what was the kitchen. She paused.
At 1 a.m., the water started coming in. Maybe it will stop, she thought. Then by 4 a.m. #Harvey reached into the back rooms of her home. It was too high, so she grabbed her kids and swam out the window her sister had broken for her. She didn't bring anything else with her. Her family's two cars flooded too.
She'd seen floods before, but in Vietnam. It looked the same, she said. Back in #Vietnam, the river was right outside the window. In southeast #Houston, nearby Sims Bayou became a river too.
"This was my kitchen. It's still my kitchen," she said, pointing to the empty room with exposed pipes, some still dripping. All the appliances were gone. She was only able to save a little bit. She threw away her laptop, computer, printer... "Many things are gone. See?” She lifted up a now broken wireless phone, pressing the buttons. "No good."
I let her get back to work, she still needed to spray bleach in three more rooms and the sun was starting to set, which meant the mosquitoes were coming.

Feb. 25 will mark six months since Hurricane Harvey barreled through Texas. #BecauseOfHarvey is a look back to the people I met and the places and things I saw.
