Meet Hvaldimir, the enigmatic beluga whale whose unexpected appearance near Norway’s shores in 2019 captivated curious minds worldwide. Equipped with camera gear labeled “equipment of St. Petersburg,” his arrival sparked speculation about his origins and intentions, with some playfully entertaining the notion of him being a Russian spy. In a charming twist, he was aptly named Hvaldimir, cleverly combining the Norwegian term for whale and the moniker of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

While suspicions may have swirled, Hvaldimir quickly emerged as an adored figure among beluga enthusiasts. First spotted on April 26, 2019, off the coast of Hammerfest, close to Ingøya island, and the village of Tufjord on Rolvsøya island, he sported a snug camera harness marked “Equipment St. Petersburg.” His interactions with boats and apparent attempts to free himself from the harness piqued the interest of animal rescue teams and local fishers. Eventually, a brave fisherman named Joar Hesten donned a survival suit, leapt into action, and successfully loosened the harness buckles. Hvaldimir’s subsequent behavior revealed a sociable and endearing personality – he frequented the boats, displaying an affinity for play and food, and exhibiting a gentle disposition. Responding to calls and enjoying scratches around his blowhole, he even followed a boat to the harbor in Hammerfest.

As the story of this extraordinary beluga unfolded, the Norwegian Directorate of Fisheries and law enforcement encouraged the public to refrain from feeding Hvaldimir and to respect his space, aiming to prevent undue stress on this captivating and charismatic marine visitor.
