We are excited to introduce a new series that delves into The Sonder Project's Theory of Change, breaking it down into its impacts and outcomes. Our aim is to elucidate how our programs contribute to empowering communities and, ultimately, eradicating extreme poverty through high-impact, sustainable development.

To kickoff we highlight our 'Water Is Our Right' initiative, in which we drill deep-water wells and distribute affordable water filters that improve health outcomes in rural communities 

For many families in Burkina Faso and Malawi, available water sources, such as shallow wells or streams, can be notoriously contaminated with a variety of bacteria, viruses, and chemicals originating from human and animal waste, agriculture products, and other pollutants. Consuming this water can cause a variety of sometimes fatal illnesses, especially for children, such as diarrhea, rotavirus, cholera, and typhoid. Frequent illness from water also causes children to miss school, and parents to miss days of work. 

The available water is also often murky and brown from dirt and sediment. Yet this is the same water families must use to wash dishes, clothes and themselves, leading to risky hygiene at home.

In contrast, water from a Sonder well comes from deep aquifers within the ground, protected from the risk of contamination from surface pollutants. The water is also naturally filtered through many layers of rock and sand, cleansing it and making it safe to use for drinking and washing. Using this clean water immediately improves a family's health and hygiene, preventing disease and supporting cleanliness at home.
