"About a year after Nick and I got married, we tried to have a baby. When I didn’t get pregnant in a few months, I began tracking my cycles. After a year, I scheduled an appointment with Dr. Carolyn Kubik (now retired), a reproductive endocrinology specialist at the Magee-Womens Center for Fertility and Reproductive Endocrinology in Penn Hills.
Nick and I took it as a good sign when I found out I was pregnant just after our consultation with Dr. Kubik. The first ultrasound at 9 weeks was heartbreaking, though, because our baby no longer had a heartbeat.
In January, I had a very early miscarriage. In May 2020, we tried again and an ultrasound at five weeks looked good, but the next ultrasound showed an empty gestational sac. Each loss was emotionally exhausting, but we truly wanted to have a baby.
In August 2020, Dr. Kubik started me on letrozole, a medicine that promotes ovulation. The pattern continued: I got pregnant right away, then had an early miscarriage. In October I had an ectopic pregnancy. After all of this heartbreak and pain, I no longer wanted to try having a baby naturally. To be honest, I wasn’t sure I even wanted to try at all.
But in early November 2020, we realized that Nick’s health insurance would cover one cycle of IVF. Under Dr. Kubik’s care, I started taking supplements and medicines to prepare for IVF. We found out we had a perfectly graded embryo. Dr. Sanfilippo transferred the fertilized egg into me in May 2021, and a few days later, my pregnancy test was positive.
At each appointment, we were prepared for the worst. But my one viable egg beat all the odds! Other than feeling fatigued, my pregnancy was easy. On Jan. 13, 2022, we drove down to Magee to have our baby. Dr. John Fisch was my ob-gyn, and the induction and delivery went smoothly — Nolan was born a healthy 7 lbs. 11 oz. The care I received from the doctors, nurses, and staff at Magee was wonderful.
Recurring pregnancy loss can feel extremely defeating. Despite many tries and many heartbreaks, there can be joy after so much loss, and Nolan is definitely our joy. They truly are a symbol of hope that other mothers like me can have a baby." - Jamie
