"I have been privileged to practice as a female medical oncologist in Western Maryland for the past 15 years with the support of a strong, forward-looking hospital administration. Having women as a part of the staff and leadership brings vital and comprehensive perspectives to hospitals and community health. I am also very much aware I stand on the shoulders of women who forged new paths for women in education, and in medicine. Having completed my undergraduate degree at an all-women’s college in the suburbs of Philadelphia, Bryn Mawr College, I met women who had attended the Medical College of Pennsylvania (previously Woman’s Medical College of Pennsylvania, established in 1850, among the first medical schools that accepted women). These young female physicians then continued their training in general clinics in Philadelphia. I subsequently attended Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia and completed my residency and oncology fellowship at Georgetown University Medical Center, where I was influenced by numerous women in internal medicine, oncology, and hematology along the way. I now also walk alongside other women in medicine and in health care, who like me, are role models to the younger generation of women, as we carry on our roles, with great support from those around us, as mentors, researchers, providers, mothers, and important contributors to our society."
