“He was the calming force not only in #respiratorytherapy, but he was the calming force for the whole entire hospital. Respiratory was very much the face of this disease, and they really took on an immense amount of responsibility.”

Darby Scarantine, RRT is a #respiratory supervisor at UPMC Mercy Hospital. In addition to caring for patients with breathing problems, Darby took on another important role in the management of PPE for hospital personnel. That included helping more than 500 physicians, nurses, and staff get the correct fit for their N95 respirators.

Because of Darby’s critical work in a very challenging time, he is this month’s recipient of the penguins UPMC Healthcare Hero Spotlight.
