## Caption

Continuing our celebration of black historical figures, Rowdy wants to highlight black people in film and other visual media. Some of the best performances put to the silver screen have been done by black actors, including Mahershala Ali in Moonlight (2016), Denzel Washington’s Oscar winning performance in Training Day (2001), as well as Viola Davis’ Emmy award winning performance in How to Get Away with Murder.

Young black actors are reinventing comedy, with Ayo Edebiri and Donald Glover creating incredible pieces of media (Bottoms, Community, The Bear) that inflect the way gen-z speak and interpret culture as a whole. Issa Rae and Quinta Brunson have highlighted the female black experience through creating and starring in critically acclaimed shows Insecure and Abbott Elementary, respectively. Glover has also created an acclaimed show, Atlanta, that highlights a different sect of the black experience.

It would be impossible to name every amazing entertainer in this caption, but it is imperative to acknowledge that the greats of today exist because of their hard work, and the hard work of those before them. Hollywood has a history of belittling the black experience in early (and sometimes current) film and in order to fully understand the greatness of our favorite actors’ achievements today, we have to recognize what they have overcome.

Many early black actors were relegated to playing stereotypes of themselves, played as fetishistic or ‘comedic’ grotesque caricatures. Now, it is somewhat better, but there is still work to be done.

So celebrate your favorite black actor, rewatch a movie or show that you think captures the black experience, but keep in mind that people are a mosaic with their background affecting, but not usurping their whole existence.
