Blowing bubbles in a stellar nursery

N44 is a complex nebula located in the Large Magellanic Cloud about 170,000 light-years from Earth. The nebula is filled with glowing hydrogen gas, dark lanes of dust, and countless stars of different ages. One of its most distinctive features, though, is the dark, starry "superbubble" seen near the top of this image captured by NASAHubble.

The hole, which is about 250 light-years wide, is something of a mystery: it may have been created by stellar winds from the massive stars in the bubble's middle, or by the expanding shells of old supernovae.

Image description: This image of a distant nebula is filled with innumerable stars of different colors and sizes. Dust and gas overlay the photo in areas of greater and lesser density; near the top-center, though, a oval-shaped region of the image is virtually free of dust, allowing the stars within to shine through.
