Feeling cute. May move across the room later.

Sometimes I frown…but when I do, it’s because you won’t go to sleep. Did you know one of Thomas Edison’s early inventions was a Talking Doll (1890) that used a miniature phonograph for the voice? Not creepy at all. Only on the market for one month (imagine that), the phonograph proved to be too fragile for children to play with. Yes, that’s the reason. Edison subsequently had the device removed to allow for the remaining dolls to be sold. This doll, on display at Thomas Edison National Historical Park, certainly doesn’t wander the shelves each night looking for a new voice. Have a good one!

Audio: Restored recording of Talking Doll (1890) reciting Hickory, dickory dock lyrics; the cylinder was digitized on July 25, 2011 at Thomas Edison National Historical Park using an Archeophone cylinder playback machine.
