Grape soda lupine (Lupinus excubitus), found in the Panamint Mountains at @deathvalleynps is currently blooming and giving off its distinct sweet smell of – you guessed it- grape soda! 🍇 This purple plant is part of the legume (bean/pea) family and has silvery green leaves and purple flowers on long stalks. The silver color of the leaves is due to a large number of small, shiny hairs. The plant name “excubitor” means sentinel or watchman, which makes sense because grape soda lupine can reach an impressive height of 6 ft (1.8 m)!
