It’s not the heat that gets you, it’s the h̶u̶m̶i̶d̶i̶t̶y̶ ̶ dinosaurs. 🦖

Well, it may be the heat. Oh, hi there! Summer inspires us all (let’s be honest, not all of us), to go outside and explore the great outdoors. Air conditioning, please?

If you do head outdoors, remember that high temperatures and the risk of heat illness can happen at any national park whether it’s located in an urban environment, a historical site, in the mountains, or even in the desert (but it’s a dry heat?). Bottom line, be prepared for high temperatures and the increased risk of heat-related illnesses while recreating. Did you see that dinosaur? What dinosaur? More water, please!

Here’s a few more tips to beat the heat. 🌞

🧢 Protect your skin. Wear sunscreen and have a hat and sunglasses to help combat the high temperatures and prevent damage from UV light.

💧Drink water often. Stay hydrated and drink before you feel thirsty. Plan to bring extra water just in case you need to place a cup on your dashboard to watch for concentric ripples portending the arrival of a large creature.

🌴 Rest often, and in the shade, if available. On days with extreme heat, plan extra time to allow yourself to rest and cool off frequently during your activity. If water is available, consider completely soaking yourself (tastefully) to keep cool. Find a tree that throws the best shade. Really, that hat? Bold.

🦬 Don’t mess with wildlife. There are many reasons why not to, but keep in mind that running from a wild animal, that you probably just annoyed, will increase your heart rate, lead to additional sweating, and ultimately result in strong feelings of thirst…and pain. Nobody got time for that.

Stay safe out there. Learn more heat safety tips at https://www.nps.gov/articles/heat-illness.htm
