## Caption

Did you hear the legend of the peacock? It’s a beautiful tail. 🦚

Male peafowl, also called peacocks, are instantly recognizable with their striking tail feathers. Revered in their original range country of India, peafowl have spread around the world as symbols of wealth and power. They are the largest member of the pheasant family.

The staff at Bent’s Old Fort had to remove an antique mirror from the billiards room as the peacocks kept jumping up on the pool table to admire themselves. (Or possibly face down a similar looking adversary?) Located in southeastern Colorado, Bent's Old Fort was a trading post that relied heavily on oxen, mules and horses for transporting furs and trade goods down the 600 mile trail to and from Missouri. Journals mention goats, chickens, pigs, buffalo calves, milk cows, peacocks and sheep. When you visit the fort, you’ll see many of the same animals breeds that were present here in the 1840s.
