Narrator: It wasn’t. They didn’t.

Maybe next time. Built to defend the river approach to Washington, DC, Fort Washington has stood as silent sentry for over 200 years. Along with the historic fort, the park protects over 900 acres of varied habitat from the shoreline on the Potomac to meadows and forest. Being located along the Atlantic Flyway makes it a great place to spot birds. The area is home to a wide variety of residential and migrating birds including: Loons, Herons, Hawks, Owls, Woodpeckers, Falcons, Flycatchers, Viroes, Bald Eagles, Martins and Swallows, to name a few.

Birding can be a social activity (or not). Many parks offer programs where you can meet other people and look for birds together, pooling knowledge and providing more pairs of eyes and ears. Even informally, birders generally "flock together" and share notes. But if you'd rather keep to yourself, there's plenty of space to do that, too.
