## Caption

“We’re on our way to fossil country, kids! Who knows what a fossil is?” – Ms. Frizzle

During the Early Eocene at Fossil Lake (@jdfossilbedsnps), Autumn must have been a riot of color given the discovery of more than 300 fossil leaf morphotypes (distinct kinds). Just imagine all the deciduous leaves of red, orange, gold, and russet contrasting with the ever-green palms and ferns, and turquoise water of Fossil Lake.

From @agatefossilbedsnps to @dinosaurnps, John Day Fossil Beds National Monument to @badlandsnps, fossils are found in the rocks, museum collections, and cultural contexts of more than 270 National Park Service areas. They span every period of geologic time from billion-year-old stromatolites to Ice Age mammals that lived a few thousand years ago. Visit national parks with paleontological resources and learn more about our important fossil heritage.
