There is far more than sand at Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve! With ecosystems ranging from wetlands to alpine tundra, expect the unexpected on a visit ⁣to south-central Colorado. The 30 square mile dunefield is surrounded by alpine peaks, forests, lakes, grasslands and wetlands. With this diversity of habitats comes a plethora of wildlife, including the snowy egret, a spectacular shorebird that occasionally breeds in wetlands west of the dunes.⁣⁣
