Get your popcorn ready! The end of 2023 is upon us, and to celebrate a blockbuster year, we’re taking a look at the most popular movies among IMDb fans worldwide 🎞️ Catch the top ten movies below, and click to see the full list 👉 https://t.co/n4I3ANFSX6
1. Oppenheimer: Christopher Nolan’s biopic brought J. Robert Oppenheimer’s controversial career into subatomic focus on screens this summer — an explosive companion to Barbie during a history-making weekend at the box office. The countdown on Nolan’s grand-scale project started in 2021, and its anticipated debut snatched up $82.4 million domestically on opening weekend. It remained the top title on IMDb for a full month, securing the #1 overall spot for 2023, and has expected entries for Best Picture, Best Director, and several more categories at the 2024 Oscars. Its first major win? A spot in IMDb’s Top 250 Movies of all time, according to IMDb user ratings.

2. Barbie: It's hard to believe there was a time when #Barbie seemed like a box office gamble. Thanks to Greta Gerwig’s magic, the doll who came to life in the form of Margot Robbie boxed up $1.44 billion at the global box office, while dismantling the patriarchy in her native Barbie Land (and in the real world). Rarely have movies created a cultural conversation quite like the Barbenheimer era, where fans dressed up for opening weekend, men felt attacked, and the Mattel Cinematic Universe was born.

3. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3: James Gunn has officially closed out his tenure as guardian of the Guardians, delivering an emotionally satisfying box office success that concludes the fan-favorite trilogy. Spending three weeks in the top spot on MOVIEmeter, the series finale — which earned over $845 million worldwide and the title of the fourth highest-grossing movie of 2023 — may not mark the end of the Guardians, as a post-credit scene confirmed Star-Lord's return.

4. The Little Mermaid: In a case of the box office receipts not quite matching the buzz, Disney’s latest live-action reboot of an animated classic entered the year as one of the most anticipated movies of 2023 but struggled to meet worldwide revenue expectations (despite an impressive domestic opening of $95.6 million on Memorial Day weekend). Interest in #TheLittleMermaid put the film on top of IMDb’s MOVIEmeter for two weeks as visitors flocked to the site to learn who would be bringing to life iconic characters Ariel (Halle Bailey, in a star-making performance), Ursula (Melissa McCarthy), King Triton (Javier Bardem), and more.

5. John Wick: Chapter 4: Keanu Reeves is what a movie franchise needs to become increasingly successful with each new sequel. #JohnWick4 earned a franchise-best $440 million at the worldwide box office and saw the embattled assassin — who eschews dialogue for bone-breaking action — meet his maker (but, come on, not really). Hitting #1 on our MOVIEmeter chart during its release back in March, it's essentially guaranteed that Wick'll be back for a fifth outing, but we hear any continuation will head in a new direction.

6. The Super Mario Bros. Movie: Mario the plumber returned to the screen in 2023 to smash the box office like a question mark block. Universal’s film raked in a whopping $1.36 billion worldwide, making it the second-highest-grossing movie of the year and the most successful video game adaptation of all time — plus, it hatched a Billboard Top 100 hit with Bowser's love song "Peaches," performed by Jack Black. Critics were mixed on the animated feature’s story, but fans fell in love with the Mushroom Kingdom adventure, sending #TheSuperMarioBrosMovie to the top of MOVIEMeter during its release.

7. Five Nights at Freddy’s: #FiveNightsAtFreddys quickly became the highest-grossing horror movie of 2023. Welcoming back Josh Hutcherson and Matthew Lillard to big-screen success, the film became the biggest theatrical release to date for Blumhouse, the production company cornering the worldwide horror market. While the first movie might not have been gory enough for ardent FNAF fans, its sheer number of Easter eggs set up a series of potential sequels, spin-offs, and perhaps even a prequel. Fazbear and Co. topped our MOVIEmeter chart for two weeks in October, and the movie is still riding high as 2023 comes to a close.

8. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse: The 'Into the Spider-Verse' sequel catapulted the franchise to new heights, swinging past its predecessor's total gross of $384.5 million after 12 days and becoming the sixth-highest grossing film of the year. Playing on the multiverse theme, two versions of the film were released in theaters with slight dialogue and animation differences, which kept the fans guessing while trying to keep up with the 280 variations of Spider-Man that appeared in the film, including fan-favorite newcomers like Spider-Punk, Spider-Woman, and Spider-Man India!

9. Killers of the Flower Moon: While the return for Martin Scorsese’s latest film #KillersOfTheFlowerMoon may have seemed middling at first glance, Hollywood has labeled the film a major hit. 'Killers of the Flower Moon' is a 206-minute long period piece that opened against Taylor Swift’s first wide-release concert film and a guaranteed streaming release in its near future. And even with all of those cards stacked against it, the legendary director’s 27th feature took home $44 million worldwide opening weekend, received rave reviews from critics, and landed in the #BestOf2023 at IMDb.

10. The Flash: While #TheFlash didn’t resonate with audiences at the box office, it certainly brought fans to IMDb in 2023. Warner Bros. struggled to market the film, given it was common knowledge that this was officially the lame duck period of the DCEU (the DC universe is getting a full reboot under new studio heads James Gunn and Peter Safran). Still, director Andy Muschietti cranked the gain on multiversal fan service with cameos from various incarnations of DC superheroes across movie and TV history. So while the movie struggled in theaters, IMDb became a tool for everyone wondering how many previous Batmen and Supermen they could expect to see on screen. The answer? All of them.
