Fifty-two years ago, on July 20, 1969, the Lunar Module Eagle landed on the moon. For the first time, humans set foot on a surface beyond the Earth. Though the moon is a giant leap (238,900 miles) from Earth, it only takes a few small steps to get a spectacular view of it from one of your national parks. Your parks are home to stellar views of night skies. They have also been places for innovative scientific research and planning on the ground. Many parks, like @cratersofthemoon_nps in Idaho and @hawaiivolcanoesnps, were used for training future astronauts. Today, the National Park Service and @nasa continue to collaborate on research, data collection, and outreach. ⁣

Since much of the moon's surface is covered by volcanic materials, it was important that Apollo 14 astronauts Alan Shepard, Edgar Mitchell, Joe Engle, and Eugene Cernan knew something about the lava they would encounter. Visiting Craters of the Moon National Monument allowed the astronauts to become educated observers who could describe the surface features they were exploring to geologists back on Earth.
