To celebrate nurses across Vidant Health, we are launching a series titled, “Nurses of Vidant”. Each story will be unique and capture conversations with Vidant Nurses as they share personal moments and why they chose a career in Nursing.

Join us this week as Camilla Dorsey, Emergency Room Nurse at Vidant Medical Center, shares her story.

When I was younger, I wanted to be a nurse but I worked several different jobs. After some time as a bus driver, I finally decided to pursue nursing. I became a nursing assistant and I was determined to go to nursing school at some point. My five beautiful children became my motivation and I would say they are also my role models. I watched my older children pursue their education and that really motivated me. I wanted to be better, so after four years as a nursing assistant, I enrolled into nursing school. As a single mom, I shuffled between work, football, and cheerleading practices. There was a point my two youngest children were at home for two months because of Hurricane Florence. It wasn’t easy for us but we pushed through. I was able to rotate my day shifts as a nursing assistant to night shifts. I attend my nursing school classes in the day. As I worked the night shift, my team was very supportive. They knew I was in school and they encouraged me. I graduated with my nursing degree in 2020 and that was a very proud moment for me. I’m very appreciative for the supportive environment at Vidant. From nursing assistant to registered nurse, that’s part of my story. I would encourage others to take advantage of your opportunities, make it worth it.
