Last night’s election will bring in one of the most diverse groups of politicians in history. But that’s not all: An amendment passed in Florida that restored voting rights to 1.4 million people with past convictions, Massachusetts voted to protect transgender people from discrimination in public places, and voters in Idaho and Nebraska passed Medicaid expansions that will give tens of thousands of adults coverage. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Here are some other highlights worth noting: - For the first time, Americans elected more than 100 women to the House of Representatives.
- The first Muslim women, Rashida Tlaib (@rashidatlaib) and Ilhan Omar (@ilhanmn), were elected to Congress. - At 29, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (@ocasio2018) became the youngest woman ever elected to Congress.
- Jared Polis (@repjaredpolis) of Colorado became the first openly gay man elected governor. - Deb Haaland (@deb4congressnm) and Sharice Davids (@shariceforcongress) will be America’s first Native American women in Congress.
- Jahana Hayes (@realjahanahayes) and Ayanna Pressley (@ayannapressley) are the first black women elected to Congress from Connecticut and Massachusetts, respectively. - Letitia James is the first African American (and the first woman) elected as New York State Attorney General. - Veronica Escobar and Sylvia Garcia are Texas’ first Latinas in Congress.
- Cindy Axne (@cindyaxne) and Abby Finkenauer (@abby4iowa) are Iowa’s first women in the House of Representatives. - Marsha Blackburn (@marshablackburn) became the first woman elected to the Senate from Tennessee.
- Kristi L. Noem (@repkristinoem) will be the first female governor of South Dakota.
