The Spying Scandal from team Canada has rocked the Olympics. Two Canadian women’s soccer team assistant coaches were sent home for flying a drone over New Zealand training.

But it doesn’t end there. Sources have told Canadian media TSN that coaching staff and contractors working with both Canadian women’s and men’s teams have been spying opponents for years 😳

It includes the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, when Canada beat the USWNT 1-0 in the semifinals. Sources say Canada were filming closed-door training sessions of opponents.

It also includes a game against the USMNT in 2019 for the Nations League, when Canada lost 4-1 in Orlando.

“I feel sick to my stomach, genuinely nauseated. I understand when you get to a high level, people will be ruthless and do whatever they can to gain a competitive advantage but this is so far over the line,” said former Canadian player Amy Walsh.

“The players are benefitting from the coaches cheating. There’s a certain amount of blind trust players have that coaches are doing things the right way and this is the ultimate betrayal.”

In 2021, Honduras men’s team went to Toronto to play Canada for the 2022 World Cup qualifiers. They stopped a training session after someone spotted a drone overhead.

“I’d imagine there’s probably a lot of people in Canada that fly drones, I’m sure,” then-Canada coach John Herdman said at the time. He now coaches in MLS for Toronto FC.

“And when a big team like Honduras turn up I’m sure people are probably interested in what they’re doing when they come into our country.”

“So I know for sure we won’t be heading into people’s countries too early because with drones these days, people can obviously capture footage. You’ve got to be really careful. So yeah, you got to be careful in CONCACAF. It’s a tricky place.”
