Meet our final #PAWSitivePivots feature, Christian Donnell, a recent ugafranklin Applied Mathematics graduate with a concentration in Actuarial Science.

His PLANS ➡️ 
After graduation, I took up a job as a Cage Cashier at Harrah's Cherokee Casino in Cherokee, NC, since I had two actuary exams completed but no relevant internship experience. After saving money for 6 months, I decided to travel the world in February 2020 and start studying for the IFM (3rd actuary exam).

What CHANGED? 🌀 
 I arrived in Egypt and then traveled to Abu Dhabi and Amsterdam when suddenly Covid-19 shut everything down.

How did you PIVOT? ↪️
It was disappointing to fly back to the United States, to say the least, but I dedicated the next 4 months straight to studying for the IFM exam in order to achieve my initial goal of becoming an actuary. Even with no study groups or outside help, I worked very hard to be in the 42% of people who pass. I am proud to say that recently passed the IFM exam and I am currently applying to actuary positions!

What did you LEARN? 📚 
I learned that doing something is always better than nothing and that there’s power in learning to turn negative situations into positive situations. Also, there is comfort in knowing that this pandemic is not just a problem for you individually, but everyone. That’s why even though Covid-19 is bad in a lot of ways, it’s actually a huge opportunity to show how productive you are. I personally believe that the next big interview question will be, “What did you do during the Covid-19 Pandemic?”
