Meet Taylor Potter, #UGA21 ugagrady Film Studies & EMST major.

Her PLANS ➡️ I was going to walk at graduation on May 8th and depart the next morning for 7 weeks studying abroad at the Cannes Film Festival and then in Dublin, Ireland to study travel writing. I’d been trying to make studying abroad happen for years but it never seemed to work out. This year seemed like all the pieces were lining up for me; little did I know those pieces were dominoes that would be swiftly scattered about. I had d this whole plan that I would return from a glorious summer abroad, intern for the remainder of 2020, and then move to LA to pursue a career in television writing and producing.

What CHANGED? 🙃 A LOT changed. After giving myself a weekend to feel sad about all the important moments I was losing, I decided to rewrite my college ending. Instead of graduating a year early, I decided to stay for a fourth year, which incorporated upgrading my film studies minor to a second major and being able to complete a new media certificate!

How did you PIVOT? ↪️ Since I would be at home instead of gallivanting around Europe, I decided to focus on securing an internship. After 35+ applications and a handful of interviews, I landed two part-time (paid!) internships as the Communications intern for TheRayHighway and as the Publicity intern for PATHFoundation. They were especially great because, as I was planning on another year of college, I needed to fund a year’s worth of educational expenses I hadn’t been counting on.

What did you LEARN? 👩‍🏫 The pandemic has been nothing if not a gigantic lesson that makes me think of the OutKast lyric, “you can plan a pretty picnic, but you can’t predict the weather.” And boy has this been a nasty storm. Despite the stress and unforeseen circumstances I’ve encountered, the pandemic has taught me to broaden my perspective when considering internship and job options. An opportunity doesn’t have to be what you want to do forever, but if it has good leadership and the ability to teach you transferable skills that you can take to your dream job, it’s worth your time and effort. #pawsitivepivots
