Meet Antonia Novello! Born in Puerto Rico, Antonia Novello studied at the University of Puerto Rico and Johns Hopkins University and then became a pediatric nephrologist. After finding the emotional toll of direct patient care wasn't for her, she joined the U.S. Public Health Service in 1979 and held various roles at the National Institutes of Health throughout the 1980s, including as the coordinator for AIDS research. Her work on pediatric AIDS caught the attention of the White House and in 1990 then President George H.W. Bush appointed her Surgeon General, making her the first woman and the first Hispanic to do so. As Surgeon General she led several major public health campaigns in efforts to improve health conditions and access to medical care, especially for women, children, and minority populations. She helped launch early childhood health initiatives, promoted immunization and childhood injury prevention and worked on campaigns to tackle underage drinking and smoking, as well as AIDS.

In 1993 she stepped down as Surgeon General, after which she continued a career in Public Health. She served as a special representative to the United Nations Children’s Fund for 3 years. In 1996, Novello joined the faculty of the Johns Hopkins School of Health and Hygiene as a visiting professor. From 1999-2006 she served as New York’s health commissioner.  From 2008-2014, Novello worked at the Florida Hospital for Children in Orlando, where she retired as the Executive Director of Public Health Policy.  Even in retirement, she has continued to serve, namely in the 2017 government relief mission that brought supplies and medical care to her native Puerto Rico in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria. Antonia has made it a mission to dedicate her life to ensuring equitable health systems and initiatives for so many consistently overlooked. So today during Women’s History Month let us celebrate the impactful life and career of Antonia Novello!
