Our plans to reopen are in the works, so stay tuned! 💃🕺For now, we’re here for Wine Wednesday! 🍷This week’s photo comes from Terzo’s special visit to Cantina Filippi, taken back in March of 2018. It was pouring rain then, so we sat in his kitchen and enjoyed his wines while discussing all things wine, philosophy, and Soave.

In the Veneto region of northeast Italy, the Filippi family has produced wine at the highest part of the Soave appellation, Colli Scaligeri, since 1900. Run by Filippo Filippi, the operation has an organic, artisan focus, where the vision centers around wines that portray a sense of place. The ability to see terroir in the glass is the most compelling aspect of Filippo’s wines, a rarity in a region like Soave that has been heavily commercialized and lost a number of its character and terroir-driven wines. 

The vineyards at Cantina Filippi are composed largely of the local Garganega grape, the principal grape of Soave. As Garganega typically does not express heavy amounts of fruit, often the wines of Soave can be dressed up to do so to cater to market demands. In Filippo’s hands however, a clarity exists in which you see and taste the subtlety of Garganega and its ability to take on the mineral aspects of where it is planted, creating a connection to those soils in the glass. Often Filippo’s wines have a sense of richness on the palate that quickly transitions into clean flavors of pear and wet stone matched with a verve of energy that creates a finish that feels experiential.
 
Filippo is a genuine person whose personality is in harmony with the wines he creates. The wines are pure and honest expressions of the sandy soils surrounding his home and winery in the Soave region. Overall, these are wines we love and always enjoy drinking any chance we can.
