Age is just a mindset. 💪
•
Chilean table tennis player Zhiying Zeng made her Olympic debut on Saturday, 38 years after retiring from the pros. 🏓
•
Zeng grew up a table tennis prodigy in China but decided to retire from the sport and national team play at the age of 20. She moved to Chile a few years later to coach before eventually giving up the job to pursue a career in the business world. 🌍
•
Now, Zeng’s childhood dream has come true at age 58, making her one of the oldest athletes at this year’s Games. 🌟
•
“It was the biggest dream of my life,” she told CNN Sport. “Even when I was a little girl and they would ask me what my dream was, I would say: ‘Become an Olympian.’” 💬
•
Zeng picked table tennis back up in 2020 as a way to stay active, and when pandemic restrictions lifted, she decided to enter some local tournaments for fun. Winning them with ease, she decided to do the same at the national level. By 2023, she was the highest-ranked player in Chile and was competing for the South American country’s national team. 🏅
•
Although Zeng ended up losing in five games on Saturday (11-4, 12-14, 5-11, 3-11, 8-11), her journey to the Olympics is still one of fairytales. 🧚 #thegist
