There is a major reason why a defenseman at the top of the power play is said to be the quarterback. This is because just like a quarterback the point man is often responsible for delivering the puck on time to the right players at the right moment. ⁠

In all these clips its vital to see how the defender could've passed it to his eventual target right away but instead held onto it and moved to the middle. The middle is what the penalty killers are trained to defend for obvious reasons. ⁠

So that patients with the puck by the defender in not passing it right away is the same as a quarterback looking off coverage. You can give more space and time to your teammate by simply pretending to threaten what the opponent is covering. ⁠

Watch any successful power play on YouTube and you will see an entire 5 man unit effectively implementing this strategy of patience to draw defenders away from the open  man.⁠
