As we wrap this year’s National Park Tour, I am immensely grateful to Blackpeoplewhohike for the opportunity to tell such an important story at such an important time! A group of Black people going to 5 different National parks and bringing their vibe, their black joy, their black excellence! There wouldn’t be a more fitting theme to end it all than Community. Black People Who Hike has defined community for me! I came into this project thinking I’ll be “a fly on the wall” as documentary filmmakers call it, I didn’t expect to be embraced, welcomed, made part of, included, remembered and SEEN like I was. I have always felt like the outsider in social spaces, always the guy who feels he’s not good enough, doesn’t speak well enough, not funny enough, easy to pick on and hate on, and so my guard has always been up to the sky! Through this tour I have met more people than I imagined I would, and so I came in with my guard intact, I didn’t have any expectations whatsoever. However, I found beautiful people with a great vibe and warm spirit, kind and courteous too. And so as I went through the various stops my goal was to make someone else feel welcomed and seen. Community to me means a unit made of solitary individuals who come in and work together and move together so fluid as though they’re one body with no one left behind, and that’s what I’ve experienced through this whole tour. Black people coming together, hiking together, learning together, sharing meals together, having fun together and most importantly; Healing together! I have always endeavored to tell stories that make a difference in other people’s lives, this time the difference was made in mine! I can’t forget to thank God for safety, journey mercies, perfect health and perfect peace through all these stops, we’ve walked on active volcanoes, hiked by steep edges, drove far and wide, slept in the wild, watched wild waves crash onto rocks and through all that I’ve seen the words of Psalm 121:8 repeat over and over:
“The Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.”

God is Good!
