While many of today's American society look at Memorial Day weekend as a time to barbecue, travel, and participate in many different leisure activities, I would like to take a moment to remember what Memorial Day is really about.

Like many soldiers during WWII, my father carried and played a harmonica during his time in the European Theater. After his passing, I thought it a fitting tribute to learn to play the harmonica. So for fourteen years, I have quietly gone to two cemeteries to play taps on Memorial day. One holds the final resting place of my father. The other lies the grave of a fallen hero I never knew in life.

I am no longer able to do so in California. But I will find a way to honor them here in Colorado. So somewhere in the Rocky Mountains, I will continue this tradition. Take a moment , close your eyes and listen close. You can hear the somber sound of taps. It’s different than what you’ve heard before. It’s a harmonica.

I can picture my dad with his GI buddies playing songs and remembering home in places like Stein, Germany. Some of whom never made it back. This is what Memorial Day is about. It is my simple, yet very personal gesture of respect to not only the greatest generation, but to all who sacrificed and served.

Life is a precious thing. Our lives are a series of stories and we are the author. Each chapter is defined by who we are and what we stand for: Compassion, dignity, respect, faith, sacrifice, caring, honesty, duty, honor or greed, selfishness, ignorance, arrogance, intimidation, lying and cheating. Just to name a few qualities.

It is my hope that each of you will take a moment to reflect and remember that the freedom we all enjoy does not come without a price. My thoughts and prayers are with all those who made the ultimate sacrifice in the service of this great country. Thank you for your sacrifice. I salute each of you and may you rest in peace.

In Remembrance: LCpl Joshua “Chachi” Corral - KIA 11/18/11 - Semper Fi, Rest Well.
