“How should I (they) say this line?” Stop. If you’re a young actor or parent and these words are coming out of your mouth in a self tape session, private lesson or class … please STOP 😂 🙏🏻 If you’re a coach or teacher and you find yourself saying, “I want you to say it like…” and then you proceed to demonstrate … STOP!

Great #actors are smart, thoughtful, and empathetic individuals. Start a dialogue with your #youngactor and ask questions that will encourage conversation. Create a working environment where they feel comfortable sharing their own thoughts and ideas as to how and why their character is feeling a certain way or doing whatever it is they’re doing in the scene. Having your young actor mimic you often times sounds and feels forced which results in a mediocre performance. If it happens to work out once or twice fine, but then how is your young actor progressing?

Keep in mind that this takes time. Your your actor is learning (key word) and things may not click right away. With a little bit of patience, continuous open dialogue and a whole lot of encouragement your young actor is not only learning how to approach a character and their material BUT gaining #confidence in themselves and in their choices as a performer! Their uniqueness is their secret sauce and is what sets their performance apart from others.
