On Tuesday morning, early before the sun had come up, two brave 16-year-old twins went from house to house in Cypress, Texas, looking for someone to give them refuge. The twins had broken free from handcuffs and escaped their abusive home, but they needed help. It’s unclear how many homes they tried before they finally tried the door of a woman who let them in. Shivering and not having eaten for a week, the woman fed them and listened to their story, and it is hard to hear.

The twins had been subjected to cruel abuse. Handcuffed and left to starve, they were forced to eat their own feces and drink their own urine. They were beaten when they tried to run, and the abuse had been going on for years.

The twins’ mother Zakiya Duncan (40) and her boyfriend Jova Terrell (27) were arrested, after fleeing with the twins’ 5 siblings. The siblings were found safe. But this could have been stopped 10 years ago.

In 2012, Duncan’s then 5-year-old son was taken from school to a local hospital with burns on his genitals, feet, and other parts of his body. When police went to Duncan’s house, they found a baby wrapped in clothing with their hands bound, and when questioned, Duncan admitted to various types of abuse. She was charged with cruelty to juveniles, but somehow the children were left in her care. The predictable happened, and the children were subjected to a decade of preventable abuse, and now have to pick up the pieces of their lives and try to forge a future going through CPS.
