On Jan. 29, 2021, 60-year-old Eric Lindsay decided to stop by a Meijer in West Chester, Ohio on his way home for work. He was wearing a puffy orange jacket to keep out the cold, and noticed police in the Meijer as he entered, but made his way to get the items he needed and expected to be in and out. He had no idea that the police had been called because someone was suspected of shoplifting or that dispatch had forwarded the description to the officers. This is who they were looking for: a white man, in his 30s, wearing a green or grey Carhart jacket with a red hoodie underneath. Now, Lindsay has dark complexion and happened to be the only Black person at the Meijer at the time. So guess who they went and investigated first?

You got it. The racist officers Mitkenbaugh and Csendes managed to disregard the description completely and single out the only Black person in the store. Later, one of them gave the excuse that Lindsay “looked in his direction,” which he took as suspicious behavior. Every Black person has reason to be suspicious and wary and cautiously look at and monitor the police. And since when is that a crime?
