Berkeley City Council is currently considering an ordinance that would allow small apartment buildings, known as “middle housing,” to be built in lower-density neighborhoods around Berkeley, spurring what has become a heated debate between both council members and the community.

The meeting was originally slated to include a vote on the final decision on the ordinance, but voting was delayed last minute. This delay was due to a procedural error that occurred during the research process of the initial plan in which the city failed to contact Indigenous tribes in the area for a consultation, which is required by state law.
