This conversation could be hours long…🤟🏼Follow up to previous terminology reel where I explained meaning and a little bit of history behind d/Deaf, hard of hearing, hearing impaired etc. Some people use the definitions and boundaries hard and fast while others use it loosely. I say to each their own - how you label yourself is YOUR right, YOUR business and YOUR preference. Many families and parents use what feels most comfortable and as their DHH child grows up - they give them the freedom to choose.

Sharing your deaf identity or your preference can be very personal. I tend to say I’m deaf with cochlear implants. I used to say I’m hearing impaired because that was the terminology that I grew up with. I’ll say I have hearing loss, I’m hard of hearing, I’m deaf but to different people. So to the capital D Deaf community I say I’m hard of hearing. To people that are hearing and associated with audiology or are part of the DHH community I’ll say I’m hard of hearing with cochlear implants. To people who are hearing and have no idea about what being deaf or hard of hearing is like or what is up with / what it’s all about I’ll say I’m deaf or I can’t hear very well. I have hearing loss - “what you have to say is important to me, could you grab/tap me on the shoulder, could you give me some visuals, could you make sure I can see your face? So it’s a little complicated - how do YOU explain things?
