Has someone ever said something to you but you didn't hear or understand? Did you respond with "What?" --Only to be YELLED at with such a force and energy that rattled your core? 😠 Oftentimes when asked to repeat - the speaker gets louder. ❤️While intentions are (most of the time) good, the tone of voice often loses softness, becomes abrasive, frustration oozes throughout, and well, the sound quality gets distorted. ❤️Normal hearing peers, another analogy is the movie theater surround sound being turned up WAY too loud. It doesn't get more clear - it gets louder and almost causes your vision to shake, doesn't it? ❤️So, the increased volume does NOT ALWAYS equal improved clarity. I'll try to do my part - I'll let you know what I did hear or what I think you said, and I'll ask for repetition and/or clarification. Sometimes I even need to say "Hang on, I need a minute to finish this thought before I shift my attention to you." Here are 3 things for speakers to practice: 1. Keeping the tone and inflection in your voice while raising the volume. My vocal coach encouraged this by having me focus on the energy coming from my belly/abdomen vs my throat. 2. Getting the person's attention before delivering your message (especially if using signed language!) 3. Being mindful of competing noises/voices around that can cause distraction or competition.
