Adia Millett’s show, 𝘞𝘪𝘴𝘥𝘰𝘮 𝘒𝘦𝘦𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘴, opens at icasanjose on September 16th. 

“Millett’s new work is a response to an in-depth look at the African American quilt collection at the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive (BAMPFA). Through three-dimensional “future relics,” such as quilted sculptures, paintings, glass shields, crocheted spears and an immersive sound sculpture, Millett invites her viewers to enter an abstract narrative. The space becomes a shrine and a spiritual battlefield simultaneously.”

Great works of art on public park basketball courts can challenge existing expectations and perspectives on what is possible. The 𝘛𝘢𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘍𝘭𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 basketball courts by adiamillett at Lowell Park will act as both a “battlefield” where players from all over can meet to test their ability against others but also a shrine where individuals can express their love for the game through hours of practice. 

Public park basketball court are, by definition, public spaces where anyone can come play but, to the hoopers who spend hours developing their craft on these courts, they are also private and intimate spaces, spaces where individuals can express personal freedom, challenge themselves to achieve goals, and see dreams take flight!
