## Caption

PALMYRA! Most of what you see here dates from the 2nd and 3rd centuries when the classical city was in its heyday. Palmyra’s fertile oasis and position in the middle of trade routes brought it great riches and prominence for millennium. 

Although partly destroyed by ISIS, much is intact and preservation efforts are ongoing.
