Katie Meyer’s Law was unanimously passed in the California State Assembly earlier this week, allowing it to take a step forward in its path to becoming a law.

Assembly Bill 1575, also called “Katie Meyer’s Law” in honor of the star Stanford athlete who died by suicide almost two years ago, mandates an advisor for a student facing a disciplinary issue. Meyer is believed to have taken her own life after receiving an email from Stanford informing her that she was facing a disciplinary charge stemming from an incident where she had allegedly spilled coffee on a student (witnesses allege that the coffee spill was an accident). The student was believed to have sexually assaulted one of Meyer’s teammates.

The five page letter, which was sent six months after the complaint was first filed and on the last day before the University’s statute of limitations could have closed the case, explained that Katie’s degree was being placed on hold and threatened expulsion. Katie was less than 4 months from graduation. 

The email was sent after hours, meaning that any offices that could help Katie cope with emotional aftershocks were closed. Katie also received little to no communication from the University in the six months between when the complaint was first filed to when she received the letter, leading her to believe that the issue was resolved. 

Assemblywoman Jacqui Irwin, who introduced the bill, said it is important for several reasons to sponsor Katie Meyer’s Law. The bill, if approved and signed by the governor, would mandate trained advisors be issued to all secondary public education students facing disciplinary charges, hopefully taking one step in preventing heartbreaking stories like Katie’s from happening again.
