A judge in Fergus County denied claims made by a large landowner group that wants to remove 50,000 "excess elk" for damaging their property.⁠

In his ruling on July 22, Montana district court judge Gregory Todd ruled that landowners don't have a fundamental right to kill elk damaging their property. He also said state managers were fulfilling their legal obligation to manage elk herds, and that landowners who don't allow public hunting are not eligible for relief from the courts.⁠
