Richard Serra 1938 - 2024

Richard Serra made an indelible contribution to the field of public art. His monumental steel sculptures challenged perceptions, sparking dialogue and awe in equal measure. We had the pleasure of collaborating with Serra on the exhibition of two works in the 1980s. First with “St. John’s Rotary Arc,” a site-specific arc-shaped steel sculpture at the center of the Holland Tunnel rotary in Tribeca. Then “T.W.U.,” a sculpture named in honor of the Transit Workers Union, consisting of three steel plates and exhibited near the Franklin Street subway station. Both works powerfully exemplify how Serra combined architecturally-scaled formal elegance with raw physical energy.

Serra's work invited us to engage with space and sculpture in new and profound ways. His legacy will continue to inspire generations of artists and art lovers alike. Our thoughts and sympathies are with his family, friends and supporters in the global arts community. We will continue to reflect on his remarkable contributions and the boundless creativity he brought to sculpture and our shared spaces.
