Jennifer Cloutier says her early traumatic injury was pivotal in defining her research goal—to understand how tissues regenerate after they are damaged.

Enrolled in the joint Harvard-MIT Program in Health Sciences and Technology (HST), which immerses students in interdisciplinary studies on both campuses, Jennifer will receive an MD this month from Harvard Medical School. Students on the MD track receive training to become physician-scientists and in addition to classroom studies and clinical rotations, they spend long hours in laboratories, working with leading scientists.

“As a physician-scientist, I am very interested in how organs and tissues re-form in adult organisms that are attempting to regenerate from injury,” she said.

After her graduation from HMS, Jennifer is not planning to go far: her residency assignment is at Mass General, an HMS affiliate, where she’ll train in internal medicine.

“As physicians, we can’t fix all problems,” she said. “But we can focus on what matters to our patients and try to improve their quality of life.”
