For his thesis, “A Way of Life Under Threat: Occupational Identities and Their Impact on Political Transformations in Southern West Virginia,” DJ Lacy found inspiration in his roots. A native of West Virginia and a Government concentrator, DJ sought out to explore the political shift of the coal mining community.

“After 119 pages and 35,216 words, I can confidently say this was one of the most rewarding and impactful experiences. This project has been a year in the works, traveling across coal mining communities in southern West Virginia conducting interviews with local residents. These interviews studied economic and social factors that influenced the political transformation of the region from union blue to deep red in under 30 years. Growing up in West Virginia fueled my passion for this project and I am thrilled with how it turned out.”
