Ganchimeg Ganpurev had been working as an economist for the Mongolian Central Bank, part of a team structuring a stabilization plan to rescue Mongolia’s economy, but was becoming increasingly concerned about the country's growing levels of inequality and 30% poverty rate. ⠀
⠀
To pursue her growing interest in development inequality, she enrolled at Harvard Kennedy School. But when the COVID-19 pandemic hit, she found herself caught in Cambridge when Mongolia closed its borders. ⠀
⠀
“Even if I wanted to go home I couldn’t. When I lost my grandmother—that was one of the hardest things, pushing through that semester,” she says.⠀
⠀
Although she can now return home, she’s contemplating what the future holds. She says she wants to utilize her insight into macroeconomics to address economic inequality, particularly in the context of development.⠀
