On March 24, Harvard President Larry Bacow and his wife Adele were diagnosed with COVID-19. Now feeling better, the couple donated blood in the hopes that antibodies produced by their immune systems will help research efforts to combat the virus.⁣⠀
⁣⠀
The donation will be used by the HMS-led Massachusetts Consortium on Pathogen Readiness to study various aspects of COVID-19. The consortium researchers hope to create therapeutic antibodies to treat people infected with the new coronavirus. Antibodies could also potentially be used in a vaccine that at least temporarily protects individuals at high risk for catching the virus.⁣⠀
⁣⠀
“Once Adele and I recovered from the virus ourselves, it just seemed obvious that we should try to contribute to this effort,” said President Bacow.⁣⠀
