## Caption

Due to an act of vandalism and a restoration with materials that didn't hold up over time, this 1956 painting by Mark Rothko needed careful attention after entering harvardartmuseums' collections in 1981. Over the last year, conservator Ellen Davis has been studying and carefully restoring the painting: removing remnants of the old restoration materials, uncovering areas of original, undamaged paint, and restoring damaged areas so that the painting can once again be enjoyed by visitors.⠀
